( um, yes. but mj is a weirdo who finds peter's brand of weirdness... aight, even if she'd rather die in a fiery fire before saying that out loud. #dramatic
mostly, she is determined to make sure peter is comfortable letting his freak flag fly. she's patriotic like that, you see. )
[ And guess who hasn't actually gone to bed yet because he's still kinda pumped up from swinging around town, and is currently working on his web fluid v5.0?
The screen flicks on and jitters around a little when Peter sets his phone down, propping it up against some old books. ]
[ let it be known that gwen stacy is fully aware that there is no legitimate reason why she should be taking the bus home from midtown school of science and tech
1) she doesn't even go to this school 2) she actually has to travel further away from home to get to said school 3) she also has to leave school about fifteen minutes early to get there before the last bell of the day rings 4) if the bus driver actually did his job he'd realize she didn't belong on that bus and she could get kicked off at any moment 5) it's a school bus. why ride the school bus at all when she could webswing and nobody would be the wiser?
well, she does all this because of peter parker.
because as much as she tries to play it Cool, there's a soft spot for him that goes way, way deeper than just a friendship. and she doesn't really get it yet, she can't pin point a name on it. because it's not really a crush, right, she's had those and she knows what it's like to go all gooey-brained over a boy or a girl. she's been there. done that. this isn't that. this is sprinting across rooftops to get from her shady school on the other side of town to make sure she can catch her breath before peter finds her outside of midtown tech. this is putting up with the loud, smelly bus because she knows peter likes to ride it instead of catching the train back to queens sometimes. this is feeling her heart rate bump up a tiny bit when he sits down next to her and their shoulders or their knees are touching and he looks at her with that smile that lets her know he has spider stuff to talk to her about but knows they need to wait until they're off the bus to get into it.
and today this is, for some insane reason she can't rationalize, the sudden, undeniable desire to hold his hand.
which isn't a thing they do, it's just not. sometimes he'll hug her and sometimes she'll push him but they're not the kind of friends that are all touchy-feely. they're both a little guarded even though they've known each other for years. like they're not used to that kind of affection being readily available, or someone might try and take it away if they do get it. so she's not sure why she suddenly wants to.
it's just a hand.
but normally she's fidgeting a bit, drumming on her knees or the back of the seat in front of her, and today she's not. today she's kind of just thumbing at a hole in her jeans, eyes out the window before they're looking at the space between them. rather, where they're kind of crunched close together in this little seat. because his hand's right there and she could, she could do that. she could just take his hand and see how that goes. they're both quiet today, and it's absolutely because again, spider stuff has to wait, but they're also sharing her headphones, listening to a new LP she discovered late last night. just a few tracks. nothing crazy loud, but it's enough to block out the rest of the bus, which is nice.
either way, he's right there. and so is his hand.
she does slide hers back from her knee to a little further up her thigh, so that it's next to where his is resting on his leg.
she drums her thumb to the music they're listening to, but only a bit. it's more of a fidget, really.
she sneaks a peek at him through her hair and maybe it's just good timing or the worst timing but he's kind of looking her way too and she ends up huffing and smiling down at her lap.
god.
okay! okay. they fight bad guys on the regular but she can't get up the nerve to try and hold his hand? really.
no. screw that.
she doesn't watch what she's doing because that's mortifying, but she does, finally, reach over to slip her hand under his where it's resting palm down on his thigh. it's a pretty smooth move, all things considered. she just goes for it. fingers lacing up between his and then curling up, just a little bit.
she doesn't look at him, doesn't acknowledge it, nothing. just. does it.
so that's a thing. it's happening. and now she waits for him to either laugh at her or maybe flip out because she gave him no warning. either one. rejection, sort of. she's prepared for it in whatever form he decides to show it. prepared and horrified, yes. oh, it's fine. at least she'll know for sure and won't ever do it again. that's good, right???? ]
[ It's kind of a weird reason why Peter likes the end of the school day the best. Most of the other kids like it because it means the end of classes, and it means after-school sports, after-school hangouts at the coffee shop, or after-school parties. It means ditching homework and maybe a part-time job. It means freedom and no more responsibility, and yeah sure, Peter can kind of get on board with the whole 'end of classes' bit because it means he gets to spider-up and save some people in the neighbourhood.
But for Peter Parker, the reason he likes the end of the school day so much is for the bus ride home. He used to take the train a lot more often, just because it was faster and sometimes he'd luck out and get the newer trains with the air-conditioning. But then Gwen started to take the bus too, which didn't really make a whole lot of sense on account of the fact that she didn't go to Midtown and it was kind of out of the way. But he never questioned it and she didn't either, and it meant they could listen to music together and talk about dumb stuff like who the best dog was on Dogs With Jobs last night. It was kind of like their low-key, no-pressure time alone together; neither of them had to say all that much if they didn't want to, and they could go spidering right after.
A few times Peter would find Gwen already on board, saving him a seat. He'd settle in next to her and she'd pass him one of her earbuds and they'd just spend the ride back to Queens just listening to whatever playlist she had on her iPod.
Today they're doing exactly that and Peter is totally enjoying the music. It's the kind of sound that would be great in a movie soundtrack where the story was deep and introspective. When she glances over at him, he turns back to her too, offering her a smile like, yeah, this is awesome, I'm really enjoying this --
And then suddenly he feels Gwen's hand under his, weaving her fingers through his, and it's like - whoa, okay.
Um.
He doesn't really freak out or anything. More like ... he'd always kind of figured they were just friends (even if he might have had like, the biggest crush on her for a while, which is so embarrassing, but whatever, it's fine) so it was never a thing he wanted to act on in the event that it ruined their friendship. But then she's holding his hand - she's holding his hand - so.
So! The right thing to do, the obvious thing to do of course, is to let his fingers tighten around hers ever-so-slightly, curling around hers, making it known that whatever this is, yeah, he likes this a lot, but also what is happening right now. ]
This is insanely out of character for me, I know. But I have been wanting to do more of the fun stuff.

i'm sorry, peter. you shouldn't have to handle it all on your own. it's a lot for anyone
( she's certainly put a damper on things, hasn't she? there's a beat before she continues, because her own chest wretches something unkind at the idea of vision still being here, of pietro still being alive, yet neither of them knowing who she was. wanda lives day in and day out with loss, with being alone, but having to witness another lose you was an entirely different pain.
she tries, for what it's worth, to steer them back towards something softer. )
