[ To say that Peter Parker hustles to get to Central Park would be an astonishing understatement. Between grabbing the train and then webslinging the rest of the way, he's almost a little out of breath when he finally thwips his way into the park, ditches his costume, and reappears from a dense bush in his civilian clothing.
And, yeah. He literally looks like he'd emerged from a bush. His hair is a little mussed, and the t-shirt under his sweater is on backwards. What a gosh-darned champ, right?
But he flops down next to MJ, breathless, but grinning. ]
You can't be late. [ she says shifting on the park bench a little so there's enough room for him, her own smile a little shy.]
I didn't set a time for you to meet me. [ So there you go. She glances at him, tucking her hair behind her ears before she reaches out to pluck a leaf from the shoulder of his sweater.] Hi.
But, whatever. The point is, she asked him to meet her, and that's awesome, and he's here now, and that's also awesome. And -- his brain is totally breaking right now, isn't it? Augh, please be cool, Parker.
She pulls a leaf from his shoulder, and he suddenly wants to duck his head, bashful. ]
So, I never did ask you. Where'd you hide the cat anyway?
I'm sure it'll be happier there. For now, anyway. I guess eventually you'll have to get it back to its owner, right?
[ The lady with the cardboard sword.
He shakes his head, wishing he knew what to say about her dad. He never really asked her about what it's like for her at home, but it's not the kind of thing you ask out of nowhere. He doesn't even talk about his uncle much these days. ]
Yeah, once she chills out. [ She shrugs, knowing that she'll have to return the cat to the neighbor eventually.
At his question, she nods, moving to stand up quickly, smoothing out her shirt as she does.] I'd like that. [ There's a brief, very awkward pause before she holds out her hand because... that's what they should do, right? It'd be nice to hold hands...]
[ Peter would like to say he doesn't leap to the opportunity to hold MJ's hand, but he definitely takes her cue with a fair amount of enthusiasm, fingers finding hers and slowly lacing together.
It's not the first time they've held hands or anything, but it's still new. All of this, really, is new to him. He's pretty sure he's never liked anyone as much as he likes MJ, and every time they hold hands or hug or - well, kiss, it feels like lightning. Really, really awesome lightning. ]
There's this really cool place on 87th street. They just opened a few weeks ago. I thought maybe we could get ice cream there.
[ The thing is about MJ is that she's just as excited to be holding his hand or kissing him, her excitement is just more... subdued. It isn't because she doesn't like Peter as much as he likes her, oh she does. It's just... well, holding hands is a huge, big deal for her, she wouldn't hold hands with just anyone. Nor would she give up her precious alone/reading/drawing/conspiracy theory research time for any guy.
Peter Parker is special.
And she feels that lightning too, she's just a different flavor of awkward about it. ] It's the cruelty-free place, right? [ Oh Peter, you know JUST the way to her heart.
See? She's smiling and holding his hand just a little tighter.]
[ Augh, her smile is doing funny things to him, it's kind of the best feeling in the world.
It makes him feel like he can do anything; he's buoyant, like those really dumb songs about floating in the clouds because you're like - in lo .. like with someone. Yeah. Uhhh.
Whatever, he's grinning in her direction, we're just going to ignore those super intense feelings for now. ]
